Description

A collection of 20th-century Chinese decorative arts, scholar’s objects, and commemorative items. The lot features a three-panel folding table screen with dual-sided decoration. The primary face depicts multi-coloured birds amongst flowering plum and bamboo branches in relief on a cream-coloured ground. The reverse is finished in black lacquer with gilt-heightened incised designs of vases, floral arrangements, and a cat. The panels are supported by a dark-stained, pierce-carved wooden base with ruyi-style scrolling motifs.

Included is a comprehensive calligraphy writing set presented in a silk-brocade box with a red velvet-lined interior. The set comprises two mottled bamboo-handled brushes, an oval dark grey inkstone with a small gilt-metal water spoon, a black ink stick with gilt dragon decoration, a carved stone seal with a mythical creature finial, a blue and white porcelain mountain-form brush rest, and two small porcelain vessels featuring blue dragon motifs.

The collection further contains a cast bronze commemorative medal depicting a high-relief landscape of traditional architecture, presented in a black presentation box with a yellow satin lining. It is accompanied by a printed certificate titled 中華盛世 武當大典 (Zhonghua Shengshi Wudang Dadian). Completing the lot is an incised pyrographed gourd on a wooden stand depicting a lady in a landscape, a cream-coloured figurine of a deity holding a lotus (presented in a fabric-lined box), and a group of small figures including an unglazed earthenware Buddha, a painted ceramic monk, and a Shoulao figurine.

Condition report:

The three-panel folding screen exhibits minor surface wear and small losses to the lacquer finish on the edges and reverse consistent with age. The calligraphy writing set appears to be in excellent, unused condition. The commemorative medal and associated certificate are well-preserved. Decorative figurines and the incised gourd are in good overall condition. External presentation boxes show some light shelf wear and minor staining.
