Description
This lot comprises an assortment of vintage desk and personal accessories housed within a small hinged wooden chest featuring a red velvet-lined interior. The collection includes a silver-toned metal desk instrument, likely a combination dip pen or propelling pencil, decorated with engine-turned bands and terminating in a large multi-faceted clear crystal finial. Two wax seals are included: one featuring a turned wooden handle with a circular brass matrix, and another smaller example with a reddish-stained wooden handle. Also present is a portable brass folding postal balance, which is marked with the inscriptions POSTAL BALANCE, REGISTERED, and MADE IN GERMANY. Two silver-toned metal pounce pots or ink sanders are included, one with a stepped domed lid and the other with a perforated top.
Further items in the lot include two magnifying glasses, one with a ribbed wooden handle and a smaller all-metal version. The collection also contains a French Kalmine 30 Cachets medicine tin, a metal plate embossed with the word Lebewohl, and a pocket watch with a case featuring New York imagery. Additional decorative objects consist of a small perfume bottle with gold-toned filigree detailing, a miniature black fabric purse with floral embroidery, a black-glazed bird figurine with a yellow beak, and a multicoloured floral glass or ceramic knob.
Condition report:
The items show varying degrees of wear consistent with age and use. The metal components, particularly the brass postal balance and silver-toned shakers, exhibit significant surface tarnish and oxidation. The wooden handles and the exterior of the storage chest show minor scratching and patination. The crystal finial and magnifying glass lenses appear intact without significant chips. The interior velvet lining shows light wear and fading.
