Lot 138:
Description
A carved decorative figure of Budai, commonly known as the Laughing Buddha or Hotei, rendered in a minimalist, modernist aesthetic. The figure is depicted with a characteristically joyful facial expression and elongated earlobes. The body is simplified into a rounded, fluid teardrop form with three vertical grooves on the front suggesting the folds of a robe. The piece is crafted from a mottled, honey-coloured material featuring internal swirling, consistent with a variety of soft stone such as alabaster or a phenolic resin. The base is an integral part of the organic shape. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible.
Width: Approximately 15 cm
Height: Approximately 23 cm.
Condition report:
The figure appears to be in generally good condition. There is minor surface wear and small dark inclusions consistent with the material\'s age. A small scuff or surface chip is visible on the reverse side near the upper section.
