Description

A pair of late 19th-century silver gelatin monochrome prints on glass depicting topographical scenes from the spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The larger print provides a panoramic view across the parkland of The Stray towards grand Victorian architectural landmarks, including hotels and public buildings. The smaller print depicts the Harrogate Hydropathic Establishment, an imposing multi-storey stone building. This smaller work bears a printed inscription at the bottom edge: HARROGATE HYDROPATHIC ESTABLISHMENT 6283 JV, attributing the photography to the prominent Scottish studio of James Valentine (J.V. & Co.) based in Dundee. Both images are produced as prints onto glass plates with integral hand-painted gold borders serving as mounts.

Large plate: 25.4 cm x 17.8 cm

Small plate: 19 cm x 12.7 cm.

Condition report:

The photographs exhibit signs of age commensurate with their period, including fading and yellowing of the monochrome tones. Visible surface abrasions, small spots of foxing, and minor silvering are present across both images. The gilded borders show some wear and minor losses, particularly at the corners and edges. The glass plates appear structurally sound with no significant cracks or chips observed.
