Description

An industrial archival collection of development slides relating to the British firm Courtaulds Ltd., specifically documenting the innovation and production of rayon plastics during the interwar period. The collection is housed in a custom-made, hinged wooden storage box, possibly mahogany or stained fruitwood, featuring a slotted interior for the organisation of slides. The interior contains a paper index strip numbered 1 through 50. The assortment includes multiple photographic lantern or microscopic slides, each held in a black-bordered frame. Many slides feature handwritten notations and reference numbers on the top edge labels. The lid of the box is affixed with a modern handwritten paper label which reads: COURTALDS RAYON PLASTIC / DEVELOPMENT SLIDES. / 1920-30.

Box length: approximately 15 inches.

Condition report:

The wooden case shows signs of age and industrial use, including surface scratches, scuffs, and several white paint splatters on the front and lid. The wood retains a natural patina. The brass hinges and latch are functional but exhibit oxidation. The slides appear generally well-preserved within their slots, though some labels show foxing, yellowing, and minor peeling. A few slides appear to be missing from the original numerical sequence. The internal paper index strip is intact but has darkened with age.
