Description

This lot comprises an assortment of vintage maps, advertising ephemera, and commemorative items. The primary volume is a large-format folio titled A Map of Mashonaland, Matabeleland, &c. Being a portion of the 8-sheet Map of Africa, published by Edward Stanford, Geographer to the Queen, 26 & 27 Cockspur St., Charing Cross, and 12-14 Long Acre, London. The work relates to the British South Africa Company territory north of the Zambesi and is bound in dark cloth with a pasted paper label to the front board. The collection also includes a large-format softcover album titled The Kensitas Album of National Flags featuring a Union Jack illustration. A smaller regional guide is present, titled Read’s New Large Scale Road Map Fifty Miles About Taunton, published by H. Read & Co. Advertising and promotional material includes a metal Michelin sign featuring the Bibendum mascot, and several illustrative cards for Persil, Palais de Glace, and a Chevrolet Corvette. Further items include two Historic Cars collector sheets with inset silver-coloured medallions, a Murrayfield rugby programme for a Scotland vs England match, and a silver-coloured commemorative medallion housed in a fitted blue presentation case.

Condition report:

The items show varying degrees of age-related wear. The Stanford map folio exhibits chipping, darkening, and minor losses to the paper label, with rubbing and wear to the cloth extremities. Paper ephemera, including the Kensitas album and maps, show edge wear, creasing, and instances of foxing and toning. The metal Michelin sign displays surface scratches and minor oxidation to the edges. The presentation case for the medallion shows light shelf wear.
