Description

A vintage German medical diagnostic set centred around an Erkameter mercury sphygmomanometer manufactured by ERKA (Kallmeyer & Simon). The primary instrument is housed in a vertical, hinged light hardwood case, possibly beech, featuring a glass capillary tube with an intact mercury column. This is flanked by dual black metal scale plates with white numerals graduated from 10 to 270 mmHg. A black metal identification plate is fixed to the interior of the case and is inscribed: Sphygmomanometer Erkameter Germany Standard Original Garantie-No. 153524. The unit includes a fabric-covered arm cuff connected by orange rubber tubing to a black rubber inflation bulb with a metal valve.

The collection includes a traditional binaural stethoscope consisting of black rubber tubing, chrome-plated metal ear tubes, and a circular chrome-plated metal chest piece.

Also included is a separate black textured accessory box with a dark purple fabric-lined interior. This secondary case contains an assortment of equipment including lengths of orange rubber tubing, an orange rubber inflation bulb, a small clear glass bottle with a cork stopper containing cotton wool, and a wooden-handled instrument featuring a tapered metal tip.

Main wooden case: approximately 34.5 cm x 11 cm x 6 cm (when closed).

Condition report:

The collection is in fair to good vintage condition consistent with age and professional use. The mercury column appears intact and is visible at the base of the glass tube. The wooden cases show minor surface scuffing and wear to the finish. The rubber components, particularly the orange tubing and bulbs, show signs of age-related perishing and maturation, and may be brittle. The fabric cuff shows some light discolouration and wear. Mechanical functionality has not been tested. This item contains liquid mercury, which is a hazardous substance requiring specialised handling and transport.
