Description
A trio of vintage whistles manufactured by J. Hudson and Co. of Birmingham, England. The central whistle is The Metropolitan model, featuring a cylindrical barrel stamped with THE METROPOLITAN J. HUDSON & CO BARR ST. HOCKLEY BIRMINGHAM. It is fitted with a steel multi-link suspension chain. Flanking the central piece are two The Acme City whistles. One is stamped THE ACME CITY WHISTLE MADE IN ENGLAND, and the other is marked THE ACME CITY MADE IN ENGLAND. Each whistle is constructed from nickel-plated brass with a traditional mouth-blown design, featuring a tapered mouthpiece and a top-mounted suspension ring. These models were historically utilised for police, military, and general service purposes.
Condition report:
All three whistles show significant wear consistent with age and use. There is substantial loss to the nickel plating on all examples, most notably on the two Acme City models, where the underlying brass is heavily exposed and exhibits surface oxidation and tarnish. The Metropolitan whistle shows surface pitting and dulling to the finish. The attached chain displays surface corrosion and wear to the links.
