Lot 97:
Description
A German Patent Bezard diopter orientation compass (Diopter-Orientierungsbussole), identified as Model II and dated 1928. This military-grade surveying instrument features a black-enamelled metal base and a polished nickel or chrome-plated hinged lid. The cream-coloured dial is housed within a brass bezel under a glass crystal and is marked ORIGINAL BEZARD on the central cross-bar. It includes cardinal and ordinal points in German: N (Nord), NO (Nordost), O (Ost), SO (Südost), S (Süd), SW (Südwest), W (West), and NW (Nordwest). The outer scale is graduated in 6400 mils in increments of two, a standard military measurement. The hinged lid is fitted with an internal folding metal mirror and a white celluloid directional arrow. The exterior of the lid is engraved with the word RICHTUNG (Direction) flanked by arrows, positioned above a linear centimetre scale. This lot includes the original brown leather carrying pouch with a metal button-snap closure and cord lanyard, alongside the original illustrated cardboard retail box marked with the model details and the patent holder’s name.
Lid scale: 5 cm.
Condition report:
The instrument is in functional condition with the compass needle and internal movement appearing to operate correctly. The black-enamelled base shows notable paint loss and surface wear. The polished metal lid exhibits light surface scratching and minor pitting consistent with age and use. Both the internal mirror and glass crystal remain clear. The leather pouch remains supple with a functional clasp, although it shows a significant dark stain to the lower-left corner and general surface abrasions. The original cardboard box is intact but demonstrates significant shelf wear, foxing, and worn corners.
