Lot 152:
Description
A 19th century Victorian-style box constructed with figured wood, appearing to be walnut veneer, featuring a rounded lid with an inset metal handle. The front of the box is fitted with a simple metal escutcheon and a keyhole. The interior of the lid is upholstered in green button-tufted silk accented with yellow pins. The main compartment contains a removable wooden tray lined with black velvet, positioned above a base lined with green fabric. The box is accompanied by two small metal keys and a detached metal lock plate. The construction and interior fittings suggest use as a jewellery or sewing box.
Width: 23.5 cm
Depth: 16 cm
Height: 13 cm.
Condition report:
The exterior shows surface scuffing and minor wear to the finish, particularly along the edges and rounded corners of the lid. The interior upholstery displays light staining, age-related wear, and several small areas of loss to the fabric on the rear wall of the main compartment. The metal lock plate is detached and requires refixing. The metal components show some surface oxidation and tarnish. Functionality of the lock has not been tested.
