Description

A collection of various wooden boxes showcasing diverse decorative techniques including carving, marquetry, and inlay. A primary item of historical interest is a rectangular wooden box featuring a silvered metal plaque mounted to the lid. The plaque is engraved with a crown and the initials C D above the inscription: PRESENTED TO MISS ELLEN WILKINSON M.P. AT THE OPENING OF THE CIVIL DEFENCE EXHIBITION APRIL, 1943. WOOD FROM THE BOMBED FABRIC OF THE COUNTY HALL. This box is associated with the British politician Ellen Wilkinson. The collection also includes a large box decorated with geometric parquetry banding in the Tunbridge ware style, several boxes with deep relief Anglo-Indian floral and foliate carvings, a dark wood box with a brass tiger inlay and brass corner mounts, and multiple boxes with foliate brass or mother-of-pearl inlays. Materials used across the group appear to include various hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, along with brass and shell.

Largest box measures approximately 28cm x 18cm x 13cm.

Historical presentation box measures approximately 18cm x 12cm x 6cm.
