Description
A vintage hand-carved chess set comprising a square board and a full complement of thirty-two pieces. The board is constructed from alternating squares of polished black marble and banded honey-coloured onyx, finished with a wide mitred border of matching onyx material showing natural veining and translucency. The hand-carved pieces are fashioned in a stylised, simplified form using materials matching the board: sixteen pieces in a light, banded cream and tan stone and sixteen pieces in a dark black stone. The set is accompanied by its original two-part cardboard storage box, which features a tan lid with red side borders and the word Schach, the German term for chess, printed in a white script font.
Board: 30.5 cm x 30.5 cm (12 inches x 12 inches).
Condition report:
The set is in good vintage condition. The stone surfaces retain a polished finish, exhibiting natural mineral inclusions and veining characteristic of the material. Minor variations in the stone pattern among the hand-carved pieces are present, which is typical for natural stone manufacture. The cardboard box shows age-related wear, including scuffing and rubbing to the edges.
