Lot 188:
Description
Large Chinese three-dimensional mixed-media collage, likely dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. The artwork depicts a bird of prey, rendered as an eagle or hawk, perched upon a gnarled pine branch. The bird is constructed using applied natural feathers in varying shades of brown, grey, and white to create a realistic three-dimensional effect. The pine tree is fashioned from natural wood and bark, with the foliage represented by fine, fan-shaped clusters of needle-like material. The scene is set against a pale blue-toned ground, possibly silk or paper. In the upper right corner, there are two vertical columns of hand-painted Chinese calligraphic characters in black ink; due to the calligraphic style and image resolution, a definitive transcription is not possible. The piece is housed in a deep-set, dark-stained wooden shadow-box frame featuring decorative silver-toned metal corner brackets with a stylized geometric fretwork motif.
Condition report:
The item appears to be in good overall condition. The wooden frame shows some minor surface scuffs and wear consistent with age. There is evidence of light foxing and age-related discolouration to the interior backing material. The internal feather work and wooden elements appear largely intact and well-preserved behind the glass.
