Lot 11:
Description
A group lot comprising eight decorative carved wooden items of varied styles and origins. The collection includes a pair of Asante-style Akuaba fertility figures from Ghana, featuring characteristic flattened disc heads, ringed necks, and horizontal arms with a matte black finish. Also included is a large polychrome mask in a Mayan-revival style, likely of Mexican or Guatemalan origin, depicting a central black face surmounted by complex zoomorphic carvings including a bird and serpent in yellow-ochre and orange pigments. The lot further contains two wooden profile wall plaques depicting human heads in natural medium-brown wood, one showing a rounded textured hairstyle and the other a headpiece. Completing the lot are a pair of circular dark hardwood bowls with lightly carved geometric borders and a single figural candlestick featuring two back-to-back figures supporting the candle cup.
Akuaba figures: Height approx. 23cm – 25cm
Polychrome mask: Height approx. 25cm
Plaques: Height approx. 18cm.
Condition report:
The items are in generally good condition with surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with age and use. The polychrome mask shows a visible chip and loss to the wood on the upper right edge of the headdress along with some pigment fading. One profile plaque has a small patch of white adhesive residue or label fragment on the cheek. Surface dust is present across the collection.
