Lot 111:
Description
A vintage wooden marionette of a horse, attributed to Pelham Puppets of Marlborough, Wiltshire. The puppet is constructed from painted wood and features a black yarn mane and a grey hair-like fibre tail. The cream-coloured body is decorated with a red fabric saddle finished with yellow rickrack trim. It has four articulated legs ending in black-painted wooden cylindrical hooves. The head features hand-painted details, including stylized eyes and red nostrils and mouth. The puppet is operated by a series of strings attached to a simple wooden cross-bar control.
Body length: 10 cm – 11 cm
Total length including tail: 18 cm – 20 cm.
Condition report:
The puppet is in used, vintage condition. There is extensive crazing, cracking, and surface wear to the paint on the body and legs, with some areas of paint loss revealing the underlying material. The cream paint has discoloured over time. The strings are present but tangled. The yarn mane and fibre tail are intact, with the tail appearing somewhat matted. The wooden control bar is present and functionally intact.
