Description

An early 20th-century Edwardian mahogany mantel clock of arched form, retailed by the London firm Mappin and Webb. The mahogany case is decorated with a central oval reserve containing a satinwood marquetry fan patera inlay and sits upon four stepped block feet. The white dial features black Arabic numeral hour markers and an outer minute track with red five-minute numerals at the fifteen, thirty, forty-five, and sixty positions. The dial is signed Mappin and Webb London W below the twelve o’clock position and marked French Movement at the bottom edge. It is fitted with black spade hands and a glass door within a brass bezel. The mechanical time-only movement is accessed through a circular aperture at the rear and features a balance wheel escapement with a regulator marked S and F for Slow and Fast and R and A for Retard and Avance. The brass backplate is stamped within an oval mark with S and CO and Made in France.

Height: 21.5 cm (approximately 8.5 inches).

Condition report:

The mahogany case shows surface wear and light scratches consistent with age and use. The dial and glass appear to be in good condition. The movement is complete but is sold as untested for timekeeping accuracy. No winding key is present.
