Description

This lot features two East Asian hanging scrolls, likely 20th-century productions in traditional styles. The first scroll is a Chinese jianzhi papercut work, consisting of a central red papercut mounted on a white paper ground. The design depicts a stylised character Fu (Good Fortune), which is intricately composed of animal figures representing the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac, including the monkey, rooster, and dragon. The scroll is mounted on a red and white patterned damask-style textile with dark-toned wooden rollers. A single red square seal is present in the lower-left corner of the paper ground, though the characters are currently illegible. The second scroll is an ink and light colour painting on paper, executed in the traditional Shan Shui (mountain-water) style. The composition depicts a prominent rocky cliff on the left, a solitary pavilion in the mid-ground, and distant mountains shrouded in mist. A vertical calligraphic inscription in semi-cursive script is located in the upper right. Four red ink seals are present: a small rectangular seal at the top right of the inscription, two square seals stacked at the end of the text, and a fourth square seal in the lower-left corner of the painting area. The work is mounted on a pale green textile with dark-toned rollers.

Condition report:

Both scrolls exhibit signs of age and storage typical for paper and textile mounts. The papercut scroll shows light horizontal creasing to the textile mount. The landscape painting scroll displays more prominent horizontal storage creases throughout and scattered light foxing and spotting across the paper surface.
