Description
A mid-20th century powder compact by Stratton of Birmingham, England. This example is produced in the Queen shape, featuring a rectangular form with waisted, scalloped edges. The lid is finished in black enamel and decorated with a central applied silver-tone fan motif set with marcasite-style stones. The reverse of the gold-tone metal case is decorated with an engine-turned scrolled pattern. The interior features a glass mirror to the inner lid and a separate powder compartment with a self-opening inner lid mechanism. The original paper instruction label remains affixed to the mirror, stating A STRATTON Patent. The interior frame is stamped STRATTON MADE IN ENGLAND. Included with the compact is its original peach-coloured powder puff embroidered with the Stratton name and logo, as well as a soft grey protective fabric pouch.
Condition report:
The compact is in good vintage condition. The black enamel lid displays light surface scratching and minor wear consistent with age. The gold-tone metal surfaces remain bright. The interior mirror shows minor foxing around the edges. The internal self-opening mechanism is functional. The accompanying fabric pouch shows light pilling.
