Lot 39:
Description
This set comprises a decorative pair of embroidery or sewing scissors and a coordinating protective sheath. The scissors are constructed with polished steel blades and cast metal handles. These handles feature a gold-toned gilt finish and are decorated with elaborate Victorian-style foliate scrollwork and beaded bands. The matching sheath is made from silver-plated and gilt-finished base metal, possibly brass. Its design includes a central circular boss, intricate scrollwork, and beaded borders. No visible maker’s marks or hallmarks were found on either piece. The style and construction of this set are characteristic of late 19th or early 20th-century metalware, often attributed to German or English production.
Condition report:
The set is in good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is visible rubbing to the gilt finish on the scissor handles and the raised decorative areas of the sheath. The silver-plated surface of the sheath shows tarnishing, particularly within the recessed parts of the design. The steel blades exhibit minor surface tarnish and small areas of oxidation. The mechanical action of the scissors remains functional.
