Lot 70:
Description
A collection of vintage marionette puppets manufactured by Pelham Puppets of Marlborough, Wiltshire. The group includes several figures featuring painted wooden heads, hands, and feet, with fabric clothing. Identifiable characters include a Policeman, a Sailor in a navy uniform, a boy in a yellow-and-black checkered shirt, and two blonde-haired female puppets in the style of the Mitzi character, wearing red hats and floral skirts. Also present is a character with a large pink-painted head and red hair, wearing a patterned skirt and accompanied by a small wooden bucket. These marionettes are operated by string mechanisms attached to wooden control bars. The collection includes two original yellow window boxes featuring the multi-coloured Pelham Puppets brand logo, as well as two plain cardboard boxes. A plastic bag containing disassembled spare parts, including a head, wooden limbs, and fabric pieces, is also included.
Condition report:
The collection is in a played-with condition throughout. The wooden elements show some paint loss and the fabric clothing exhibits age-related wear and light soiling. Stringing on several examples is heavily tangled or broken, necessitating repair. The original yellow window boxes are in poor to fair condition with visible creasing, scuffing, and tearing. The items in the plastic bag are disassembled and suitable for restoration.
