Description

This collection consists of two mid-nineteenth century cased photographs and three First World War era embroidered silk postcards. The photographic items comprise two portraits: one of a young boy in formal attire standing beside a chair, presented in an embossed leather covered wood case with a patterned velvet lining and an oval gilt metal mat; the other depicts a gentleman wearing a top hat and holding a walking stick, housed in a decorative gilt metal frame with a Gothic arch aperture. Both photographs appear to be ambrotypes or daguerreotypes.

The three postcards are examples of First World War silk postcards, featuring hand embroidered silk inserts within embossed card borders. One card is decorated with a floral design and the embroidered inscription To my dear Sister. A second card features a floral arrangement. The third card is of military interest, featuring the insignia of the Royal Naval Air Service (R.N.A.S.) with a crown and eagle, and the embroidered text Best Wishes.

Embroidered Postcards: 140mm x 90mm
Left Photographic Case: 95mm x 82mm
Right Photographic Frame: 108mm x 95mm.

Condition report:

The photographs exhibit age related oxidation, surface dust, and minor clouding behind the glass. The leather covered case shows significant wear to the spine and edges with some fraying. The gilt metal frame on the second photograph shows minor tarnishing and surface wear. The embroidered postcards show light toning and foxing to the card mounts consistent with age. The silk embroidery remains vibrant, though there are minor loose threads visible on the R.N.A.S. card.
