Description
A mid-century vintage tinplate toy drum manufactured by Chad Valley, England. The drum features a red painted body decorated with two primary lithographed scenes within cartouches. One side depicts a troop of bagpipers in Highland regalia, including kilts and bearskin hats, marching past a London monument resembling the Queen Victoria Memorial. The opposing side shows a marching band of Foot Guards in red tunics and bearskins, led by a drum major against a cityscape background. The central red panels are further detailed with yellow lion rampant motifs. The top and bottom rims are decorated with red and white diagonal striping. The drum is constructed with a lithographed metal body and spring-tensioned rims. It retains its original red and white twisted cord carrying strap with a red tassel. A maker’s mark is present on the bottom right corner of the Guardsman scene, reading CHAD VALLEY MADE IN ENGLAND.

Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition consistent with age and use. There are visible surface scratches and minor paint loss throughout the lithographed scenes, particularly around the edges and on the striped rims. There is some light denting to the metal rims and minor oxidisation. The cord strap shows some fraying and wear, but the red tassel remains intact. All metal tensioning springs are present.
