Description
A pair of British base metal pennies comprising an 18th-century copper issue and a late 19th-century bronze issue. The first coin is a 1797 Great Britain copper penny, frequently referred to as a Cartwheel penny, featuring a laureate bust of George III facing right and a seated Britannia facing left. This issue is distinguished by its broad, raised rim with incuse lettering for the legends GEORGIUS III D G REX and BRITANNIA. The 1797 Cartwheel was the first British coin produced by steam power at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint. The second coin is an 1895 United Kingdom bronze penny featuring the Old Head or Veiled Head portrait of Queen Victoria facing left. The obverse bears the partially visible legend VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP, while the reverse depicts a seated Britannia facing right with the legend BRITANNIAR REG FID DEF. Condition report:
Both coins exhibit heavy circulation wear. The 1797 penny shows significant smoothing of the central design elements, surface darkening, and multiple prominent rim knocks and bruises. The 1895 penny shows moderate to heavy wear with softened details on the portrait and Britannia figure, along with a natural dark aged patina.
