Description
A lot comprising two antique button accordions. The first is a single-row melodeon featuring the maker’s mark Glory stamped on the side panel along with the inscriptions Steel Bronze, Foreign, and Harp Reeds. This instrument is fitted with ten pearlized buttons and two top-mounted pull stops. The construction consists of a wooden casing with a black textured leatherette covering, nickel-plated metal corner guards, and ten-fold paper bellows featuring a floral-patterned interior. The second item is a small-scale or toy button accordion, featuring wooden end blocks with gold-patterned paper overlays and seven-fold bright red paper bellows. The Foreign stamp on the larger instrument identifies it as an import to the United Kingdom, typically associated with German manufacture between circa 1900 and 1930.
Melodeon: 28cm high x 25cm wide (closed)
Miniature accordion: 15cm high x 12cm wide (closed).
Condition report:
Both instruments show significant signs of age and use. The Glory melodeon exhibits scuffing and peeling to the black outer covering, particularly along the edges and corners. Metal components show surface oxidation and pitting. The leather straps are heavily worn and fragile. The miniature accordion is in poor to fair condition, with the decorative gold paper overlays peeling, frayed, and missing in sections, and the red bellows are soiled with wear at the folds. The internal reed condition and playability of both instruments are untested.
