Description

This lot comprises two brass pocket navigational instruments, consisting of a hunter-style compass and a folding sundial compass. The first instrument is a brass pocket compass housed in a hunter-style case with a hinged lid. The exterior of the lid is engraved with the letters U.S. and the interior features a white-ground compass card with a black printed 16-point compass rose, cardinal directions, intercardinal points, and a 0 to 360 degree scale. It is fitted with a blued steel needle and a suspension loop. The second instrument is a brass pocket sundial with an integrated compass, bearing the engraved mark STANLEY LONDON on the inner bezel. It features a folding gnomon decorated with a central sunburst motif and stylized foliate engravings, alongside a hinged chapter ring with Roman numeral hour markers from III to VIII. The internal compass has a black-ground dial with white and gold markings. Both items are constructed from polished brass and include suspension loops.
Diameter: 50mm – 60mm
Weight: Under 500g.

Condition report:

Both instruments exhibit a moderate aged patina with surface scratches and tarnish consistent with age and handling. The folding mechanisms, hinges, and gnomon appear functional. The glass over the dials is intact, though the sundial compass shows some internal dust. The compass needles move freely and appear to be in working order.
