Lot 32:
Description
A cast iron directional advertising sign shaped as a plaque with a pointed right end. The item features the Guinness brand name in raised black-painted block lettering set against a textured off-white background. A relief-moulded depiction of the Guinness Toucan, a mascot created by S.H. Benson, appears at the right, shown in flight with a glass of stout balanced on its beak. Below the brand name, the raised text St James’s Gate Brewery Dublin is visible. A small registered trademark symbol is positioned above the letter S in the main logo. The plaque is finished with a black-painted border and contains four pre-drilled holes at the corners for mounting.
Length: 29 inches
Height: 8.5 inches.
Condition report:
The sign displays significant crazing and crackling across the off-white background paint (photo 1). There are small chips and areas of paint loss to the raised black lettering and the multicoloured toucan figure (photo 1). The cast iron shows surface oxidation and rust, concentrated along the outer edges and within the mounting holes (photo 1). The structural casting remains sound with no visible cracks.
