Description
A hand-carved Shoushan figurine depicting Budai, the Laughing Buddha, in a traditional seated posture. The figure is rendered in a rich reddish-brown stone featuring mottled yellowish and pale orange inclusions, most prominent on the belly and feet. Budai is portrayed with a characteristic joyful expression, carrying a large sack over his left shoulder and holding a gnarled staff in his right hand. The carving displays a smooth, polished finish to the broad surfaces, with textured detailing to the hair, robes, and staff. The underside of the base is flat and features several irregular white surface scratches and abrasions, though no legible maker’s marks or characters are present.
Height: 9 cm
Width: 10 cm.
Condition report:
The figurine is in generally good condition. There are minor surface abrasions and light scratches consistent with handling, notably on the flat underside of the base (photo 3)
