Lot 35:
Description
A heavy cast brass garden sundial plate featuring a circular design with multiple registers of relief decoration. The outermost ring is cast with Roman numerals IV through XII and I through VIII. The middle register depicts the twelve symbols of the Zodiac, including Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, each set within an individual panel. The central field contains a series of radiating lines emanating from a vertical slot designed to hold a gnomon. A raised compass rose is situated at the south position, featuring a four-point star design with the cardinal directions N, E, S, and W. The reverse of the plate is reinforced with a raised grid of ribs and features a central mounting bracket with two threaded apertures for securing the gnomon. The surface displays an applied dark patina in the recessed areas to highlight the relief casting.
Diameter: 28.5 cm.
Condition report:
The gnomon is missing from the central slot (photo 1). A significant diagonal casting flaw or stress crack is visible in the upper left quadrant, passing through the numerals XI and XII (photo 1). The brass surface shows general signs of outdoor exposure including oxidation, pitting, and scattered verdigris, particularly evident on the reverse (photo 2).
