Lot 38:
Description
A large Moroccan style hanging lantern constructed from pierced and repoussé brass with six inset glass panels. The hexagonal body features intricate openwork geometric and foliate designs, with the upper registers decorated with repoussé work depicting birds amongst foliage. Each of the six side panels houses a clear glass pane with a pressed star or geometric texture. The lantern is topped with a tiered, pierced dome and a pointed finial, while the base terminates in a secondary spherical lower finial featuring star-shaped piercings. The structure is held together with visible flat-head screws and is suspended by two lengths of metal link chain. A modern white plastic electrical cord is fitted to the interior.
Height: 68 cm
Width: 28 cm.
Condition report:
The brass housing shows significant tarnishing, oxidation, and surface wear consistent with age (photo 1). Several flat-head screws appear to be later additions or replacements, and there are slight misalignments in the pierced metal borders (photo 2). One side panel is missing its glass pane, leaving an open gap in the frame (photo 2). The remaining glass panels are intact but show surface dust. The modern electrical wiring is discoloured with light surface dirt and should be tested by a qualified professional before use.
