Lot 40:
Description
A bordeaux maroon wool beret, traditional for West German airborne forces, featuring a black leather sweatband around the rim. The front of the headgear is adorned with a silver metal insignia depicting a diving eagle in a diagonal orientation, surrounded by a closed oak leaf wreath. This badge is the specific branch insignia for the Fallschirmjager (Paratroops) of the Federal Republic of Germany. The beret is constructed with a stiffened internal backing for the insignia and the wool shows a dense felted texture. The leather sweatband is stitched to the wool base with black thread and includes a drawstring adjustment. The metal insignia is secured through the wool with metal prongs visible on the reverse side.
Height: 12 inches
Width: 6 inches.
Condition report:
The wool beret is in good issued condition with minor surface fuzzing consistent with age (photo 1). The metal insignia is intact, showing minor surface oxidation and rubbing to the highlights of the diving eagle and oak leaves (photo 2). The leather sweatband shows light creasing from use but remains supple and securely attached (photo 1). No moth damage, holes, or tears are visible to the fabric.
