Lot 24:
Description
A wooden carousel-style pipe rack constructed from turned timber with a light brown finish, featuring three baluster supports and a circular upper tray with six carved rests. The rack is decorated with a hand-painted floral motif to the base, consisting of a red blossom with green foliage, surrounded by black scrollwork patterns. Included is an assortment of smoking pipes in various forms, including bent and straight stems. The collection features smooth wood finishes and one rusticated black bowl. The pipes are fitted with black mouthpieces, several of which show characteristic signs of use including tooth marks and oxidation. The rack base is circular with a recessed centre, and the upper tray edge is finished with a continuous incised scalloped border.
Height: 16.5 cm.
Condition report:
The wooden rack shows scattered scuffing and finish loss, particularly concentrated around the edges of the upper rest notches (photo 1). The hand-painted floral decoration to the base remains largely intact with minor surface wear. The pipes show significant carbon buildup within the bowls and heavy oxidation and tooth chatter to the vulcanite stems (photo 2). Several stems exhibit a brownish-grey discolouration consistent with age and use.
