Lot 35:
Description
A pair of earthenware ceramic tiles featuring vibrant hand-decorated tube-lined floral and landscape scenes. The first tile depicts a pastoral hillside landscape with a brown rabbit nestled amongst a dense foreground of red poppies, leading to a white cottage with a red roof beneath a stylized sunset sky. The second tile presents a botanical study of poppies in various stages of bloom, rendered in a palette of red, yellow, pink, and blue against a graduated green and tan ground. Both tiles utilize the tube-lining technique to create raised, slipped outlines that contain the translucent and opaque glazes. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the front surfaces. The reverse of the tiles is not visible.
Height: 15.2 cm
Width: 15.2 cm.
Condition report:
Both tiles exhibit fine, all-over crazing to the glaze surface. The landscape tile appears generally intact with no visible chips or cracks to the front face. The botanical poppy tile has a small chip with glaze loss on the bottom edge near the centre and shows minor surface abrasions to the raised tube-lined areas.
